Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt Franchise Business Design & Layout
An advantage of the self service frozen yogurt industry is that the customer provides the labor in regards to preparing their bowl. This means that in comparison to other concepts that have the employees behind a counter preparing dishes and bowls for customers, self service frozen yogurt concepts such as Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt stores require far less labor to operate. Fewer employee hours required to operate a store translates to a lower payroll. Lower payroll also means lower employee benefits costs, and lower worker’s compensation insurance costs. Lower operating costs means more revenue to use for other purposes such as additional marketing or pocketing as additional profit. Fewer employees mean an owner can devote more time to marketing and promoting the business versus managing it. A simpler operation allows an owner the additional time and resources to build and develop new stores. This ability to scale a franchise business with additional units is key for franchisees to develop greater income and wealth. Aside from those tangible benefits, lower labor requirements also come with the intangible benefits of simpler management. As with any business, an owner’s skill and ability to manage and lead the employees is a HUGE responsibility. It is a responsibility that can take up a lot of time. Thus, making an operation easier to manage is one key to helping franchisees be successful in many different ways.
There are other franchised and non franchised self service franchise yogurt businesses aside from Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, but one way Menchie’s separates itself from other Frozen Yogurt concepts is the store layout. The traditional self service layout is a flat wall of the self service yogurt dispensers, followed by a toppings bar and then the checkout counter with the weigh stations and the cash registers. This linear design keeps the employees at the checkout counter farther away from customers than the Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt design does. As you can see in the image to the right, the Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt design has a curved wall of the self service frozen yogurt dispensers with the toppings bar all in a semi circle surrounding the checkout counter. This design keeps the employees easily accessible to assist customers with questions and any other aspect of their self service experience. This gives Menchie’s an opportunity to have its employee enhance the customer experience by responding to customers sooner, and offering pleasant smiles to maintain the ambiance. Solving customer problems faster also allows the queue of customers to move faster which allows the customers to spend more time enjoying their self made custom bowl of frozen yogurts and less time in line. The less time customers spend in line, the better for the bottom line of the business as it decreases the amount of customers who will leave upon seeing a long line.
